Reading Readiness Instruction
Children who enter school lacking knowledge of how oral and written language work are at a disadvantage in acquiring basic literacy skills. Many children acquire this knowledge intuitively through a language rich environment. Still other children, given the same environment, fail to gain this advantage. Considerable research suggests that early intervention in language development, namely in the development of phonological and print awareness, vocabulary, and alphabet knowledge, can increase the likelihood that children who otherwise would struggle in learning to read and write will do so more easily. At the Bowie Center, instructional programs are designed to meet the individual readiness needs of children of all ages.
