Reading and Spelling Instruction

At the Bowie Center, we specialize in research-based instruction aimed at helping students of all ages experiencing difficulty learning to read and write. Individually designed instructional plans are based on the student’s level of development in acquiring literacy and on his/her specific learning needs. For students with dyslexia, a reading disorder characterized by weak phonological awareness and difficulty reading and spelling words, we offer explicit, systematic and multi-sensory phonics instruction. Other instructional designs feature developmentally appropriate word study methods, guided reading of quality, high-interest literature, and process-oriented writing. Motivation-based reading enrichment opportunities are provided for reluctant readers. The Bowie Center uses the Wilson Reading System program and the Great Leaps Reading program for their specialized reading and spelling instruction.
